REQUIREMENTS: ETH Zurich is one of the leading international universities for technology and the natural sciences. Founded in 1855, ETH Zurich today has more than 18,500 students from over 110 countries, including 4,000 doctoral students. Currently, approximately 500 professors teach and conduct research in different fields. Die ETH Zurich needed a guest access solution which granted guest speakers as well as event participants a fast, straightforward, stable and secure internet access on both campuses (Central and Höngg). Even devices not compatible with IEEE 802.1x had to be embedded into the network.
WLAN-PARTNER SOLUTION: ETH, a highly innovative institution, has always inspired WLAN-Partner to strive for top performance. The greatest challenge of the joint project was the high number of users in the network. At lecture breaks, the MPP and the applied authentication methods have to scale and cope with the high number of users. For this purpose, authentication requests are handled by a Round-Robin process on several RADIUS servers. So, if a RADIUS endpoint does not answer within a specific time frame, the endpoint is marked as inactive. It is only admitted to the circle of possible authentication endpoints after a certain while. Hence, the end user can benefit from a smooth registration process.
